Visit the best seaside town in North Yorkshire – Scarborough

Scarborough should be on your list if you’re looking for somewhere to go in the summer. You’ll have plenty of opportunity to whip out your sunglasses and lay out your beach towel here.

Scarborough should be on your list if you’re looking for somewhere to go in the summer. You’ll have plenty of opportunity to whip out your sunglasses and lay out your beach towel here.

It’s a relaxing town – you’ll have the opportunity to sunbathe on the long stretch of gorgeous beach, tuck into the iconic British dish – fish and chips – by the seaside, and take the tram back up to do some shopping.

What should I do?

1. Eat fish and chips

We went to the best rated one in Scarborough – Lifeboat Fish Bar – which is an achievement not to be overlooked, given that there are many fish and chip restaurants here. You’ll see the Trip Advisor ‘Certificate of Excellence’ on the walls; the kids getting involved in the hectic bustle of frying freshly battered fish and chips until golden. It’s a friendly, family run business that isn’t one to miss. Just make sure you dodge the seagulls if you take-away!

2. Ride the tram

What seems like a normal tram taking you from the top of the cliff of Scarborough to the beach actually has a rich history linked to the town. It was built in 1881 and is one of the oldest running cliff railways still running in the U.K. You can read more about the tram and its history here.

3. Sunbathe on the beach

This one goes without saying. Scarborough Beach is a beautiful long stretch of yellow sand and clear water. You can get here taking the tram. If you’re wanting to simply relax, take a leisurely stroll, ride a donkey (yes, you can do that on this beach and it’s especially a hit with kids), or – like me – soak up the sun, this beach has got you covered.

4. Explore the independent shops and cafes

One of the best things about Scarborough is the plethora of independent shops to have a look at – whether it be clothes, jewellery, or even a shop about trains. The cafes are just as interesting, you won’t really find your Caffé Neros here. What IS a popular option is to have coffee from the local shops, freshly baked cakes (with gluten free options), and delicious, creamy ice-cream to help you with the rays.

In conclusion, Scarborough is a town that packs a lot of character and its reputation for being a seaside town well worth a visit is known throughout the North of the U.K! Happy travels!
