The Top 5 Things to Do in York Centre

York is a small city, but contains nearly 400 pubs and the attractions that are walking distance. I break down the 5 top things to do in the city.

York is a city packed with things to do, quite literally. It’s a small city, but contains nearly 400 pubs and the attractions are about 5-10 minutes walking distance. If you haven’t already, check out the magical side of York here where I detail the Shambles. I simply had to go again; read on for the top 5 things to do in one of the best cities in the UK.

1. Drink like the Vikings at Valhalla Bar

If you come to the UK, you’ll know that one of the Brits’ favourite past-time is to day drink, and York is no stranger to the tradition. At this bar however, you’ll drink in true Viking fashion, a homage to the Vikings that settled and lived in York. This is certainly a cool bar in York!

You’ll drink ale, mead or beer in this rustic, dark and cosy bar complete with Viking décor. And if you’re feeling hungry, it’s also known for its good food – choose from various meat and cheese boards or from the varied British cuisine and have yourself a traditional Yorkshire feast.

My recommendation: The mead! It is considered the drink of the gods after all, and, according to their very own website, ‘Valhalla just wouldn’t be Valhalla without it.’ Try the fruit flavoured mead, the honey one is very popular too.

2. Have some potions at the Potions Cauldron

While I’m on the topic of day drinking, I should also mention the Potions Cauldron. Yes, it’s making a second appearance, but this time, instead of getting the butterscotch beer on its own, I had myself some ‘poisonous’ drinks instead. With names like Witch’s gin and Whizardky whisky, it certainly puts a spin on regular drinking!

You can also buy equally magical, sweet ‘potions’ to mix them with, or chase it with the butterbeer itself. I did the latter. These drinks are ‘poisonous’ indeed, they’re very strong, and a fun way to drink in York.

3. Discover York’s history at Clifford’s Tower

If you’re looking for an attraction in York that is free, this castle will give you a real taste of England’s vast history. It is one of York’s most iconic sites. Clifford’s Tower was built in 1068 by William the Conqueror to control northern England. Since then, it has had a tumultuous history – becoming a prison, a royal mint, a medieval stronghold and more.

Today, you can walk up the stairs and get a beautiful, panoramic view of York for free. You can also book to go inside (this has a fee) and see and experience an immersive story of the tower’s turbulent history brought to life with sounds and stories.

My favourite thing to do: Climb up the stairs, sit on the bench at the top and soak in the views. And as a bonus, the York Art Museum is next to the castle if you’re still after some more history. There’s a wide range of exhibitions and it’ll take a few hours to enjoy them all!

4. Golf Harry Potter style at Hole in Wand

If you’re after some light-hearted fun, this golf course in York has a magical twist that strikes the right balance. It’s a hard golf course for the adults, but is still magical and fun for kids. You’ll be greeted by hosts in character, and then make your way to the wacky golf courses – magical portals, bubbling cauldrons, and ghosts all make an appearance as you weave your way through the course. At the end, you can enjoy some ‘Cauldron cake’ and some drinks (My drink was made out of Basilisk blood!)

5. Try Portuguese cuisine at Tasca Frango

If you’ve ever had Nandos, or simply like Portuguese food, then I urge you to try this restaurant to cap off your day in York. This independent restaurant is homely and comfortable, with throws and pillows as if you’ve just stepped inside a Portuguese friend’s home. The food is freshly prepared, and you can taste it. Super flavourful, brimming with spices and drizzled with olive oil. With almost 5 stars on Google and numerous articles, it’s one of the best places to eat in York.

My recommendation: The Piri piri chicken – it’s simply divine. It’s grilled and basted in their piri piri blend. The spicy rice is also a must try – rice tossed with fresh herbs, lemon, olive oil and vegetables.

Their website is here.
